In 2009 when John Updike died, we decided to re-read some of his books. We started with the books called the Rabbit books: Rabbit Run, Rabbit Redux, Rabbit is Rich, Rabbit at Rest and the novella, Rabbit Remembered (which is included in a book of short stories, Licks of Love. It had been a long time since I had read any of these, and I had never read them one after another, in sequence, to experience the whole story. It was an intense series to read, but a very meaningful set of books.
John Updike won the Pulitzer Prize for two of these books, Rabbit is Rich and Rabbit at Rest. The group has been highly acclaimed as some of the most influential novels of the century. In the first book, Harry (Rabbit) Angstrom is a young man, just starting out in his adult life. In the last book, "Rabbit" dies. In the interum, "Rabbit" goes through his life, with the backdrop including the historical events of the times.
I will attach a link to a couple of books from Amazon. The four Rabbit books can be purchased one at a time or all in one volume. The last novella is included in another book, Licks of Love, which also includes some other short stories. We don't buy and keep a large number of books, but these are worth owning and including in our personal collection of books.
